I studied chaos theory before becoming a perfumer, and I think it's why natural materials have always fascinated me. Each has its own personality: a complex system of hundreds of molecules. The soil, the water, the time of day it's harvested, the way it's distilled — all of it changes how it smells. There's an aliveness you can feel.

In Earth, I used five versions of a single Mediterranean shrub, rock rose, and no two are alike. The essential oil, steam-distilled from its leaves, is dry and herbal. An extract of its resin, which the plant makes to survive drought, is dark and leathery. Together, they create a depth none could alone.

What I love about an eau de parfum is how the alcohol reveals all of this detail. If a perfume oil is a room by candlelight, an eau de parfum is that same room in bright light.
