Faulty sensory appreciation — these words have been rolling around in my head lately. It's a concept from the Alexander Technique about how our habits can distort our senses. You might feel like you're sitting straight when you're actually hunched forward. The ‘right’ posture feels wrong because you're so used to the tension.
In the Alexander Technique, it's specific to how we feel in our body, but it got me thinking about other areas too. Where might what feels ‘right’ simply be what's familiar? Where are we sensing things incorrectly out of pure habit? And what would it feel like to try something different?
