Eau de parfum vs perfume oil

Since launching the eau de parfums, a few of you have wondered how a perfume spray differs from a perfume oil, so here’s my A to your Q.

I think of a spray as a room in sunlight, and an oil as the same room by candlelight. A spray feels bright and detailed. You can smell the transitions as it opens from top to middle to base. A perfume oil, on the other hand, feels softer and rounder. The notes come together to form more of a single impression.

Our eau de parfums are blended into organic perfumer’s alcohol. Alcohol molecules are small and volatile, so they evaporate quickly, lifting the notes off your skin in order from top to base, creating a sense of movement and change. Our perfume oils are blended into organic fractionated coconut oil. The oil’s molecules are larger and less volatile, so it releases the notes slowly, creating a smoother, more blended experience.

I love a spray when I want to create a little world around me. My favorite is spraying my clothes. I don’t know why, but catching a whiff of yesterday’s perfume on a sweater feels comforting and tender at the same time.

For me, wearing a perfume oil is more intimate and ritualistic. The scent stays close to my skin, which I love for the moments that are just for me, like my weekly Moonlists or getting ready for bed.

I also like layering a spray with an oil. It gives me the best of both worlds, and the two blend into something new. Right now I’m loving Air spray over Plants oil.

If you’d like to try the new eau de parfums, our Mini Collection Set has all three, and you can put the value toward a full-size bottle.

And if you ever have any perfume questions, I love all scent chats!
