Your Second Family

In our culture, a huge importance is placed on finding a life partner and prioritizing family, but studies show our close friends play a greater role in the quality & length of our life.

In Okinawa Japan, where people live better & longer lives than anywhere else, people form a social network from a young age called a moai. Moai, meaning 'meeting for a common purpose', is a cultural tradition for built-in companionship. Groups of five young children are paired together and make a commitment to each other for life. As their second family, the moai get together regularly for social, emotional and even financial support.

The power of the moai lies in the consistency of connection - time spent together that develops deep bonds of trust and a sense of safety & support.

Perhaps you can create your own mini moai. Maybe it's a walking moai, a sunday afternoon wine moai, or a weekly meal moai - whatever it is, do it regularly and soon you too will have your own second family.
