Paths to Calm

What helps you find a sense of calm these days? Whatever it is it's probably different from your partner, friend or parent. That's because what you need to feel safe is unique, depending on your life experiences & relationship with yourself.

In his new 'Routes to Safety' model, therapist Jake Ernst identifies the eight main ways we access calm during difficult times. Perhaps you need the house to be ordered & tidy (structure & certainty), perhaps you're craving more spiritual practices (inner guidance), or maybe you need lots of time in nature smelling the trees (sensory experiences). Once you're aware of what you & your loved ones need it's much easier to have some empathy for all the different ways we're managing these times.

'It helps us understand the routes we've used to access safety in the past and how we can get there in the future.' - Jake Ernst, MSW RSW

And, if you're like me & sensory experiences are one of your key paths to calm, check out our chat with Goop on how to get out of your head & back to your heart through the power of our senses.
